Jazz lovers in the heart of Suffolk are in for at treat in Debenham in May when the town’s first ever Jazz Festival takes place at Debenham Community Centre over three days from Friday 5th May 2017.
The festival will feature eleven bands over the three days – both local bands and some from further afield. Opening the Festival at 7pm on Friday 5th May are four top class musicians who are known world wide playing the music of “The Genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli” they are Gary Potter, Ben Holder, Nils Solberg and Andy Crowdy
Dixie Mix then take to the stage at 8:30pm having recently celebrated their 10th Anniversary for the Dereham Jazz Society with their tribute to Louis Armstrong show “Exploring Louis’ Legacy” playing to a packed house. They were chosen by Rod Stewart to tour with him on his 2014 tour – a no mean accolade.
On Saturday 6th May John Parker 3’s Company start proceedings at noon followed by Rosie Val & The Cambridge Jazz Company at 1:30pm whilst the Anglia Allstar Jazz Band bring the afternoon to a close. Colin Bowden’s New Orleans Jazz soothes us gently into Saturday evening with the day being rounded off by Tad Newton’s Jazz Friends playing ‘Basin Street to Basie’.
Sunday’s activities start off in The Angel Pub in the centre of Debenham where Spats Langham’s Hot Fingers will play from noon. Back at the community centre at 2pm and John Petters Sounds of Benny Goodman grace the stage followed by Bob Kerr and his Whoopee Band. Then, rounding off an excellent weekend will be the effervescent Nicola Farnon and her Musicians.
The Festival is organised by Bob Kerr who ran the Stradbroke Jazz Festival for fourteen years before moving to Debenham and discovering the excellent facilities available at the community centre. Music aficionados will know Bob from his own band Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band which he has run for the last fifty years and for his involvement with The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band with whom he still tours.
