The Play That Goes Wrong
Having just won a Tony Award on Broadway only two days ago, for “best scenic design in a play” – it seemed the perfect time to venture over to Norwich’s Theatre Royal on a Monday evening to witness “The Play That Goes Wrong”.
Currently playing in four locations (London, on a UK tour, New York and Australia) this is a play I’ve heard a lot about over the last few years as it continues to reach new milestones. Deemed “guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter!” and a mix of Fawlty Towers meets Noises Off – I guess it’s clear to see why there’s such a demand to see it, especially among us Brits.
If you’re wondering what it’s all about, The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong… does! The accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call.
In a quest of trying to get to the bottom of who murdered Havisham, it really does become the most ridiculously funny farce. The audience go from gasps and clutched breath to fits of giggles across the auditorium! Even down to the fact we are introduced to a few characters as we enter the theatre, while they run around searching for Winston the dog…
The cast really do deserve their round of applause, as they have high-energy through-out, with great physicality and expression, and they really do put themselves through the wildest of things! Each cast member was of equal brilliance, and I would think it takes a particular level of skill to do this style of acting night after night with such ease. Though I imagine they have tons of fun in doing so!
The set is particularly clever, with it’s 1920’s grand house feel and plenty of minor details. That is, until it all falls apart anyway…
Overall, this show is the perfect type of escapism the world needs in its current times. Two hours of pure ridiculousness and hilarity to help us switch of from all that is outside of the theatre. If you love to laugh, and don’t mind a bit of silliness – get a ticket!
