The poignant re-working of a fairy tale set in wartime created by one of the world’s top choreographers is on its way back to Norwich Theatre Royal.
And a number of familiar faces mixed with some fast-emerging new talent will star in Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella, when it returns from Tuesday 27th February to Saturday 3rd March 2018.
It tells the story of a chance meeting between Cinderella and a dashing young RAF pilot who find themselves falling in love at first sight. But the horrors of The Blitz sees them parted in this thrilling and evocative story set in London during World War Two.
Its previous visit to Norwich sold out and delighted audiences, and Matthew is looking forward to bringing it back. He said,
Cinderella is one of my most heartfelt works and a personal favourite amongst my re-imagined classic stories.
Sharing the lead role will be Cordelia Braithwaite and Ashley Shaw, fresh from their success playing Victoria Page in his previous production, The Red Shoes.
Meanwhile Harry, the heroic pilot who captures her heart, will be performed by Dominic North who is well-known for a number of roles for Matthew Bourne including the lead in Edward Scissorhands, Will Bozier who also starred in Edward Scissorhands as well as Wicked in the West End, and Andrew Monaghan who has performed for Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Birmingham Royal Ballet and the 2012 London Olympics.
Cinderella’s ‘Fairy Godfather’ known as the Angel will be danced by New Adventures stalwart Liam Mower who has appeared on the Theatre Royal stage, many times and got his big break in the West End run of Billy Elliot, and Paris Fitzpatrick, who is a former BBC Young Dancer of the Year and member of Northern Ballet.
A host of highly-experienced dancers and New Adventures favourites, will also portray Cinderella’s parents. Sybil, her stepmother, will be performed by Madelaine Brennan, who has been part of New Adventures for around 15 years. She will share the role with Anjali Mehra, an acclaimed choreographer and performer who has worked on dance, opera and West End shows, and won the prestigious Christopher Gable Choreographer Award.
Meanwhile Robert, Cinderella’s father, will be played by Alan Vincent, who is a long-serving member of New Adventures, an associate artist with the company’s educational arm Re:Bourne, and was tour director for the acclaimed production of Lord of the Flies which came to Norwich Theatre Royal in 2014 featuring professional dancers and the cream of emerging East Anglian male dance talent.
He will share the role with Dan Wright who also has a strong pedigree of New Adventures roles as well as appearing in The Snowman for Sadler’s Wells, and a number of film and TV roles.
Also starring in the production will be one of Norfolk’s foremost male dance talents, Reece Causton. Brought up in West Norfolk, the former pupil of King’s Lynn’s Springwood High School trained at the Central School of Ballet and was part of the cast of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake which came to Norwich Theatre Royal in 2013. He has worked for a number of ballet companies around the world and also teaches workshops for New Adventures.
Cinderella also boasts sumptuous costumes and sets by Lez Brotherston and lighting by Neil Austin, both of whom are Olivier Award-winners, and it will feature a specially-commissioned recording played by a 60-piece orchestra.
The production is also touring to mark the 20th anniversary of its West End premiere and the 30th anniversary of New Adventures itself.
John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said:
“This heart-stopping and touching production will take the audience right into the heart of war-torn London. As well as looking and sounding fabulous thanks to a stunning score and sets, it features an incredible array of talent with performers well-known to Norwich audiences.”
