Royal Hospital School scholars collaborate with local amateur orchestra
On Saturday 18th November 2017, music scholars form the Royal Hospital School will team up with the Community Light Orchestra for an evening of light classics and hits from the stage and screen.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the 70 piece orchestra is made up of amateur and semi-professional musicians and meets weekly for rehearsals at Henley Community Centre. Performing three concerts a year, the group has a strong following and a waiting list to join certain sections.
The ensemble is led by Cecilia Metherell and conducted by Roger Jones, who was the Bandmaster of the Royal Hospital for over twenty years. The current Bandmaster, Richard Harvey, will appear as the guest conductor. Both men served full careers as musicians in the Royal Marines Band Service, totalling nearly fifty years’ service between them.
The concert, which will be held at St John’s Church, Cauldwell Road, will feature around ten musicians from the Royal Hospital School and will be in aid of the East Anglia Children’s Hospice. This invaluable experience for the young players is just one example of the fifty-plus musical events in the RHS musical calendar, offering pupils an unrivalled exposure to music of all styles and genres.
Starting at 19:30, the concert is free to attend, and promises to be a great night out for music lovers.
