On Sunday 20 May 2018, Dresden Philharmonic performs the latest concert in the 2017/18 Cambridge Classical Concert Series, at Cambridge Corn Exchange. Michael Sanderling conducts and the soloist is Jennifer Pike.
Renowned for her ‘dazzling interpretative flair and exemplary technique’ (Classic FM), violinist Jennifer Pike has taken the musical world by storm with her unique artistry. She gained international attention in 2002, when aged 12 she became the youngest-ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and the youngest major prize winner in the Menuhin International Violin Competition. The Times has hailed her as a ‘superbly graceful virtuoso’ and The Independent as ‘simply spectacular’.
Opening with Weber’s Euryanthe Overture, the centrepiece of the evening is Tchaikovsky’s dazzling Violin Concerto, played with consummate skill by Jennifer Pike. The evening ends with Beethoven’s inimitable Fifth Symphony. Steve Bagnall, Managing Director of Cambridge Live, said:
‘For his fifth symphony, Beethoven composed five striking opening bars that have become iconic and yet there’s so much more to the piece than those instantly recognisable notes. The euphoric finale is every bit as exciting as the opening.’
There will be a pre-concert talk starting at 6pm at Millers Music Shop in nearby Sussex Street, free of charge to concert ticket holders.
