The Hollow

Bury Theatre Workshop return to Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with their new production of The Hollow by Agatha Christie. A jolly gathering explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow, home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell.

Dr Cristow is in trouble when his mistress Henrietta, ex-mistress Veronica and wife Gerda arrive simultaneously. Also visiting are Edward (in love with Henrietta) and Midge (who loves Edward). Veronica successfully rekindles the affair with Dr Cristow but is unable to persuade him to divorce his wife. She unwisely states that if she cannot have him then no one shall. Very soon someone is dead, nearly everyone has a motive and opportunity. Enter Inspector Colquhoun and Sergeant Penny to solve the crime…

The Hollow is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie, first published in the UK in 1946 by the Collins Crime Club, it originally featured her famous detective Hercule Poirot but in 1951 Christie adapted the book into a highly-successful stage play, omitting Poirot from the narrative. After an eight-week tour, the play opened at the Fortune Theatre in London on 7 June 1951 to an enthusiastic press response. It transferred to the Ambassadors Theatre on 8 October 1951 and ran for a total of eleven months and 376 performances.

Bury Theatre Workshop is a community theatre group formed in February 2012 from a group of theatre enthusiasts, actors, writers and directors, eager to give a voice to the creative and dynamic spirit of the community of Bury St Edmunds. Through productions, workshops and play readings they offer opportunities to learn from each other and to develop the community’s experiences of theatre both as audience members and as participants. Previous productions at Theatre Royal include The Good Person of Szechwan, The Duchess of Malfi and The Ladykillers.
