Finding Joy

Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is delighted to welcome Vamos Theatre, the UK’s leading full mask theatre company, back to the stage when they perform their award-winning show, Finding Joy, approaching the subject of dementia with humour and humanity.

Joy is 83. She is funny, loves to dance, and is losing her memory. Her grandson Danny is rebellious, bright and always getting into trouble. When Danny decides to look after Joy, they discover a shared playfulness and a mutual affection. But is that enough to take on the challenges ahead?

Finding Joy is based on the true-life story of Danny, an 18-year-old boy who looked after his grandmother, Joy, as she made her way through middle and late stage dementia. Danny’s methods were unorthodox but he was a natural carer and looked after her with an inspiring freshness and positivity and always with total respect for her changing reality. The play has been performed to audiences across the world, including China, Germany, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Finland and the UK.

Worcester-based Vamos Theatre was established in 2006 and is the UK’s leading professional full mask theatre company. They devise and tour accessible, humorous and fearless work which showcases the best in full mask performance. Praised by press and public alike for its engaging storytelling, physical dexterity and emotional insight, the company continues to involve and engage audiences across borders and boundaries with its wordless theatre. This wordless style also makes the shows fully accessible to d/Deaf audiences without the need of a signer.

Finding Joy is at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds for one performance only, on Monday 22 October at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, call 01284 769505, book online at www.theatreroyal.org/shows/finding-joy/ or visit the theatre in person.
