The Jive Aces
Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe
Thursday, 13th September 2018
The thought of a night out on Felixstowe seafront on a wet Thursday in mid September didn’t fill me with huge enthusiasm, I’m not gonna lie, especially as it was to see a band that in my mind, was a novelty bunch of middle aged men, dressed in garish big trousers, dancing like your granddad at a wedding and living off 15 minutes of fame from a TV talent show. I could not have been more wrong.
The rejuvenated Spa Pavilion may have only been half full, but the sense of excitement built as the six band members took to the stage in a ‘friends from next door’ kind of way.
The next hour and a half was a complete treat for the ear and eye. They reeled off a number of classic songs from the 1930’s to 50’s with the added visual touch of a dancing couple performing the jive; and could they move, I had a stitch from just watching them!
It got even better. Lead singer Ian Clarkson introduced special guests. Firstly Amy Baker, an amazing vocalist, then Ipswich girl Lottie B on baritone sax. Add into this a cameo from another local, Sarah Hitchcock from The Three Chordettes, and the show was complete.
It was a disappointment to hear the words ‘final song’ but the big finale with all the evenings performers on stage sent us home with a hop in our step and a smile on our face.
I now understand why they do over 300 performances a year, all over the world. A portion of humble pie eaten!
