This October Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre and Cramphorn Studio really does have something for everyone’s musical tastes.
Blowing the roof off the Cramphorn Studio as they construct their ‘Stairway To Heaven’ will be ‘Purple Zeppelin‘ on Saturday 6 October. The band is an unholy alliance of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, two of the heaviest bands the UK has ever produced. This ultimate rock tribute is so good they have featured in the BBC TV documentary ‘The Joy of the Guitar Riff’. The sunburst Les Paul will be channeling the spirit of Blackmore and Page as it cranks out all of the classic songs from both groups, including; ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Black Dog’ and of course, ‘Stairway To Heaven’, for a full-blown night of heavy rock! And the amps go up to 11!
At the other end of the music spectrum will be ‘Steeleye Span‘ on Sunday 7 October. The veteran folk group will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next year but are showing no signs of slowing down, having recently released their eighth album in twelve years. The list of musicians who have served in the group is like a roll-call of British folk legends, and the current line-up is no different. Evergreen singer Maddy Prior is joined by Benji Kirkpatrick (formerly of Bellowhead, and son of accordionist John Kirkpatrick), Liam Genockey (played with John Martyn, Kevin Ayres) and Julian Littman (Gerry Rafferty and Dexys) amongst many other talented members. The band will be playing a mix of new songs and classics from their back catalogue when they play the Civic Theatre.
One of the brightest music stars the UK has produced in recent years is Adele. Instead of paying hundreds of pounds to see her at a stadium, the more affordable and intimate option is to see the Adele endorsed ‘Someone Like You The Adele Songbook‘ at the Civic Theatre on Thursday 11 October. Katie Markham recreates the magic of Adele’s songs, including; ‘Chasing Pavements’, ‘Set Fire To The Rain’, ‘Skyfall’ and many more hits, all backed by a full live band – a talent that should not be missed!
Lovers of vintage rock and roll will adore ‘The Sensational 60s Experience‘. The show features many stars of 1960s, including Mike Pender (The Searchers), Chris Farlowe, Herman’s Hermits, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Dakotas and The Fourmost. The three-hour celebration of songs from the 60s will include; ‘Needles and Pins’, ‘I’m Into Something Good’, ‘Hippy Hippy Shakes’ and many more classic hits. ‘The Sensational 60s Experience’ will be at the Civic Theatre on Thursday 25 October.
‘Beyond The Barricade‘ features some of the past principal performers from Les Miserables as they recreate some of the most memorable songs from Broadway and West End musicals. The show is in its incredible 19th year and has delighted fans all over the world and has played prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall. The singers, along with the live band, capture the feel of the original arrangements and the show gives musical theatre an exciting concert experience. ‘Beyond The Barricade’ is at the Civic Theatre on Sunday 28 October at 7.30pm.
The ‘M&G Lullaby Concert’ takes place on Saturday 27 October at 10.30am. Aimed at children aged between two and seven, the concert is an exploration of shapes, puzzles and music, all performed by musicians from the City of London Sinfonia. The children will have the opportunity to play the instruments themselves after the concert.
The Lunchtime Concerts continue every Wednesday in the Cramphorn Studio at 1pm and offer a delightfully relaxing interlude to the day. The lunchtime concerts are free, although a donation of £1 is suggested.
