Tord Gustavsen

Norwegian pianist and composer, Tord Gustavsen will return to The Apex with his trio on 29 October. Programmer Nick Wells explained why Tord is now a regular visitor to the Bury St Edmunds venue; “I just love Tord Gustavsen’s music. When he brought his beautiful and graceful music to Bury for the opening night of the Bury Festival in 2007 it was wonderful, and for many people it was their most enjoyable gig of the festival that year.”

Tord Gustavsen has released seven critically acclaimed albums with his trio and extended ensemble. Before starting his solo career, he had already been an important part of the Norwegian jazz scene for several years. Tord’s music continues to evolve, with memorable melodies, subtle grooves and musical space with gentleness and depth. His way of blending jazz history with Nordic reflective moods and lyrical beauty, brings an intriguing voice on today’s music scene.

His latest album sees him return to his classic piano trio format, embracing his concept of full-sounding ‘Nordic Blues’, along with harmonic landscapes and an overall meditative feel.

The album features seven of Tord’s original compositions in dialogue with ancient Scandinavian hymns and three striking re-workings of J. S. Bach Chorales.

“A stunningly beautiful recording… draws the listener in so completely – making us consider each note, each small gesture in its ethereal, shimmering whole… nothing less than magical.” – Downbeat, USA.

Tord will be joined by two of the most intriguing players on the vibrant and eclectic Scandinavian jazz scene – his long-standing musical partner Jarle Vespestad on drums and one of Norway’s most sought after bass players, Sigurd Hole.

Tord Gustavsen Trio play the Apex on Monday 29 October at 7.30pm. Tickets are £22, with £5 tickets for those aged under 25. Contact The Apex Box Office on 01284 758000 or visit www.theapex.co.uk for more information or to book.
