Midge Ure

One of the best-known musicians from the Eighties who helped change the face, style and sound of music is set to perform two of his greatest albums live as he opens his 2019 tour in Norwich.

Midge Ure co-wrote, produced and recorded Visage’s Fade To Grey and Ultravox’s Vienna, two iconic songs which helped bridge the gap from rock and punk to synthesised pop and the era of music videos.

Both also came from albums which helped bring what many regarded as the art-school alternative to mainstream music into the charts.

Midge himself with the group Band Electronica are to perform the entirety of Ultravox’s Vienna album along with tracks from Visage’s debut album Fade To Grey live during 2019 at a host of venues, with the tour beginning at Norwich Theatre Royal on October 6, 2019.

Midge said the songs did not just change the musical landscape but his life too. He explained: “Autumn 1979 was a pivotal point in my career trajectory. Over the previous two years I had grown from being part of the pop band Slik through post-punk band The Rich Kids to being a stand in guitarist for Thin Lizzy.

Over the course of autumn into winter 1979, while working on the Visage project with Billy Currie, I was invited to join Ultravox. The work we did that winter on the Vienna album was an exhilarating rush of creativity the likes of which I had never experienced before.”

The concert will also make history as it will be the first time ever that the Vienna album will be performed in its entirety as well as being the first occasion that many of the songs from that debut Visage album are played live.

John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “The era of electronica ushered in a host of musical influences and styles which still sound great today and have inspired many current musical performers. The chance to re-live many incredible songs together with the opportunity to see a true musical legend from the Eighties and beyond will make this one of the city’s hottest musical tickets of 2019.”

Midge Ure will be at the Norwich Theatre Royal on October 6th 2019 at 8pm.
