19/01/2012

DEPTH are a 4 piece Rock/Post Hardcore band from Norwich. They released their debut album 'Situations Fulfilled' in 2010, which also saw the release of their debut Music video 'Burning Pages' which has now been watched by over 20,000 people on YouTube.

Over the years the band have played all over the country and shared the stage with many great bands such as Deaf Havana, My Passion and Shadows Chasing Ghosts, and February 2012 sees the release of their highly anticipated new EP.

"DEPTH's Next release could definitely be one to watch out for!"

Ahead of their EP Release Show at the Norwich Waterfront Studio on 25th February, Sarah at GrapevineLive chats with the guys about their history, how it felt to have their music in the shops, and how smashing to bits the guitar Ryan learnt to play as a child, is the only fitting way to celebrate when they make it big

Sarah: How did Depth get started, and how long have you been going for?

'DEPTH originally formed roughly 7 years ago. It was a bit random, but Paul and Ryan had played together before in a small local band, while Luke and Robb started jamming together after school, playing classic songs messing around. We decided to get together and play a selection of songs from our favourite bands at the time, and things have just progressed from there! From covers to writing and playing originals.'

Sarah: You say you started off as a covers band, covering bands and songs that inspired Depth. Can you give us some example of the stuff you used to play?

'We played a wide range of music, from Deep Purple, Status Quo, Alklaine Trio to Lostprophets, Funeral For a Friend and Green Day. The wider the variety the better!'

Sarah: How did it feel knowing your record was going to be available for the mass public to buy when it went on sale at HMV, iTunes, play.com etc?

'It’s great, Just to be able to walk into a shop and see it on the shelf was amazing.'

Sarah: Which do you prefer, recording or touring?

'Both are good times, however I think touring takes it, there’s nothing better than performing live to different people every night, it’s the best part of being in a band!'

Sarah: What’s you favourite and perhaps not-so-favourite things about touring?

'Meeting new people and getting people jumping around at our shows. Seeing different places and just having an all round laugh! Not so favourite, there’s not that many. Touring is what we live for!'

Sarah: What do you do when you come across a lyric of melody? Do you ring each other and “sing” it down the phone? Text it? Or keep it in your noggin’ until you next see each other?

'We either sit around in band practice and try throw out many riffs as possible, or our guitarist, Luke, sings melodies and guitar ideas into his phone and records it. It’s not the greatest way but its a good way! It can take us a while to nail down a decent melody we all like.'

Sarah: Do any of you still own your very first instrument that you learned to play with?

'A couple of us do! Our guitarist Ryan still clutches on to his Vintage SG copy. We're all in agreement that if we get onto a big tour this year then we can smash it.'

Sarah: Do you ever get nervous or anxious before you’re about to perform? When was the last time this happened?

'Sometimes, not nearly as much as when we first started. We all get on stage and just have a good time, that’s what its all about!'

Sarah: What separates a ‘good’ gig, from a ‘great’ gig?

'When the crowd get into it as much as we do then it turns great! However, we try to achieve great gigs with every show! They're all different which again is all part of the fun!'

Sarah: What else are Depth hoping to achieve this year?

'We aim to be touring a lot this year and hopefully play a couple of smaller festivals. We are releasing a new EP on February 25th so grab hold of it and tell us what you think!'
