Home From Home

Home from Home is a creative collaboration of fifty dancers aged over fifty, devised and produced by EncoreEast. It is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and co-commissioned by EncoreEast, DanceEast, The Place and Norwich Theatre. Damn Fine Dance is working with Molly Wright and Luke Birch, Cadenza with Laura Anderson, The Place Dancers with Alleyne Dance and EncoreEast has begun working with Alethia Antonia.

Alethia is a British Caribbean, UK-based choreographer, performer, teacher and researcher. Alethia has performed internationally, including with Russell Maliphant Dance Company, James Wilton Dance, James Cousins Company and Scottish Dance Theatre. As a Work Place Artist at The Place and a part-time PhD researcher at De Montfort University, Alethia’s choreographic work has been performed at Sadler’s Wells, DanceEast and Centre Pompidou.

With Edd Arnold, Alethia co-created Focus for EncoreEast in 2021

“I am excited to be working again with EncoreEast. I loved working with them on Focus; watching them made me cry. They were so keen to learn and developed so much as dancers, I can’t wait to see how far they have come since. I am not surprised EncoreEast has taken this generous, innovative and ambitious step to produce Home from Home.”

EncoreEast began their creative process by exploring ‘endings’ in words and movement, creating solos, duets and small group pieces, developing pathways and learning challenging movement sequences – changing fronts and spacing and travelling across the floor with a hint of a handstand! It has been glorious, great fun and just a bit bruising, but Alethia has got EncoreEast moving in ways we did not think were possible.

Alethia is being assisted by Chelsea Gordon who is helping EncoreEast with technical information, teaching class, supporting anyone finding a move or section especially challenging and collaborating choreographically with Alethia. The dancers have started to put various elements together and are looking forward to having three days together in early June to complete the piece.

All four Home from Home companies are sharing their works in late June at DanceEast. Artistic Director Luca Silvestrini will then combine the four separate works into a single piece to be performed in Ipswich, Norwich and London in October.
