EXPLOSIVE AVANT GARDE DANCE RETURNS WITH FAGIN’S TWIST FOR IPSWICH’S FIREWORKS NIGHT
November will see Avant Garde Dance return to Ipswich with explosive performances of Fagin’s Twist, which premiered at the Jerwood DanceHouse last year in April 2016. With this Autumn’s performances on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 November, and a special repertoire workshop for those aged 11 – 16 on Saturday 4 November too, it is only fitting that the final UK performances of Fagin’s Twist should be staged back in Ipswich where it began its journey.
The London-based Avant Garde Dance has an unmatched contemporary, hip hop dance style, and here it tells the previously untold story of a notorious and complex villain, made famous by Charles Dickens in his iconic tale, Oliver Twist. Hugely cinematic, this dramatic piece of dance theatre was incredibly successful in its premiere stage last year, and is now back bigger and better in 2017.
Fagin’s Twist imagines Fagin’s youth, driven by greed and ambition in the face of overwhelming poverty. This coming-of-age tale is an outing for all the family, as you view Dickens’ classic tale in a new light. Your expectations will be flipped on their head as you meet five familiar characters, set against a backdrop of poignant, uncomforting streets where fairy-tale endings are hard to come by.
Ahead of Ipswich’s Christchurch Park fireworks on Saturday 4 November, young movers can get up close to Fagin’s Twist choreography by taking part in an exciting repertoire workshop from 1 – 3pm. They will learn some of the dance moves that will feature in the performances, a fascinating insight into the company’s edgy movement style, led by the its dancers (some dance experience is necessary to take part).
Pair this young movers’ opportunity with watching Saturday’s Fagin’s Twist performance, and start Ipswich’s fireworks night with a bang!
See Fagin’s Twist on Friday 3 November at 1.30pm, 7.30pm and Saturday 4 November at 4.00pm with prices ranging from £10 (£7 concessions, £30 family ticket). Take part in the workshop on Saturday 4 November, 1.00pm for £12.
Both events take place at DanceEast, Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich. For more information or to book call the Box Office on 01473 295230 or visit DANCEEAST.CO.UK.
