The raw sounds of the Essex Delta will be live on Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre stage on Friday 19 April when Dr Feelgood plug in the amps and blow away the years.
Formed on Canvey Island in 1971, the band quickly became one of the most popular groups on the London pub rock circuit, a result of their high energy R&B sound which was driven by guitarist’s Wilko Johnson’s distinctive chopping Telecaster riffs. The band soon released a succession of well-regarded albums such as ‘Down By The Jetty’, ‘Stupidity’ and ‘Sneakin’ Suspicion’, but the big break through to the mainstream was the hit single, ‘Milk and Alcohol’ which reached the top ten and got the band on Top of the Pops.
Although original members Wilko Johnson, John B Sparks and The Big Figure slowly left the band, they were replaced, and singer Lee Brilleaux continued with the band. Sadly, the force of nature that was Lee Brilleaux passed away in 1994. However, it was Lee’s wish that the band continue and the musicians that form Dr Feelgood today were in the band when Lee fronted it. Both drummer Kevin Morris and bassist Phil Mitchell have spent 29 years in the band, whilst guitarist Steve Walwyn has put in 23 years of service. Former Animals vocalist, Robert Kane joined in 1999. This line-up continues to play all over the world and have won over old and new fans with their infectious R&B sounds. In March, the band will open for The Stranglers on an extensive UK tour, so The Feelgood’s headline show at The Civic will be a great opportunity for the band to give it full throttle for the opening night of their own headline tour which will visit Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.
The show promises to be a must for fans of the band with all the band’s best loved songs; ‘Roxette’, ‘She Does It Right’, ‘See You Later Alligator’, and of course ‘Milk and Alcohol’ all down on the setlist. The gig starts at 7.45pm, so don’t miss your appointment with the Dr!
