250 Years of Circus in 60 Minutes

Kicking off Circus 250 celebrations in Norwich (jointly a Circus City with Great Yarmouth), Gossamer Thread Circus premiere a brand new circus show ‘250 Years of Circus in 60 Minutes’ at Norwich Arts Centre on 4th July, featuring an international cast of highly-skilled artists.

A rip-roaring ride through the last 250 years of circus from its birth on the banks of the Thames, through the golden era where it was the largest from of entertainment the world had ever seen, through its various and varied permutations right up to the present day, told through its pivotal moments and universal truths.

It all began with a ring…
In 1768 Philip Astley paced out a circle on the banks of the Thames in which to perform tricks on horseback. 250 years later, the standard circus ring remains the same size, and that moment is recognised as the birth of modern circus.
