Arts Centre’s Fundraising Campaign Draws Closer

Staff, volunteers and supporters of the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts are gearing up for the 30th August 2020. This would have been the legendary DJ’s 81st birthday and it is the date set for #Challenge81, the centre’s fundraising campaign.

During the day there will be a range of fundraising activities and individual challenges taking place, highlights of which will be shared on social media and uploaded on to the John Peel Cenntre YouTube channel throughout the day.

The day of activity will culminate at 7.30pm with the broadcast of 81 Minutes of Music on YouTube . This is a compilation of artists who have ‘donated’ some of their music/words to the #Challenge81 fundraising campaign. There is fantastic array of contributors from local to national and international artists showing their support including Billy Bragg, Tim Burgess, Fairport Convention, Peter Hook, Badly Drawn Boy and Wedding Present to name but a few.

Staff at the centre are pretty sure it’s a line up that has never played the same bill before and even includes some touching and personal messages and memories of John Peel. You can access highlights of the challenges as well as 81 Minutes of Music of music on the John Peel Centre YouTube channel on 30 August

Also finishing on 30th August 2020 will be an online auction/garage sale organised by Third Man Records based in Nashville, USA. The auction features guitars, amplifiers, personal items, notes, stage equipment, and other one-of-a-kind items from the label’s archives and owner Jack White and The White Stripes musical career and collection.

A portion of proceeds from this will go to benefit the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts as well as USA based organisations Gideon’s Army, and the Detroit Phoenix Center. The online auction opens on 26th August 2020 at 9am (EST)and closes 30th August 2020 at 9pm (EST). More information about the auction can be found here:

The John Peel Centre is part of a national initiative, #SaveOurVenues, launched by Music Venue Trust to prevent the closure of hundreds of independent music venues and the centre is asking everyone who enjoys watching 81 Minutes of Music to support all of the activity by donating to their campaign at

Funds raised from this campaign will go to the John Peel Centre, with the aim of helping it survive through the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

What better way to say Happy Birthday John than celebrate some of the things he is most fondly remembered for, at the same time as raising some essential funds for the creative, community arts centre set up in his name.

Please visit our website to find out how you can donate and other ways of helping the centre.
