BSEAODS Present Ghostly Comedy Blithe Spirit

Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is delighted to welcome Bury St Edmunds Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (BSEAODS) back to the stage with their new production of Blithe Spirit, which they previously performed as the first production after the reopening of the theatre in 1964 (Tue 2 – Sat 6 Jul).

Socialite and novelist Charles Condomine invites an eccentric medium and clairvoyant to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. However, the scheme backfires when, after the séance, he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira.

The play, written by Noël Coward, was first seen in the West End in 1941, running for a total of 1997 performances, it successfully transferred to Broadway later, running for 657 performances. Coward also adapted the play for film in 1945, starring Rex Harrison, and directed a musical adaptation, High Spirits, on Broadway in 1964.

1964 was also the year that Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds was reopened, having laid dormant as a barrel store for Greene King, who at the time owned the building (and still do, to this day). After a successful fundraising campaign, the newly refurbished theatre’s first production was Blithe Spirit, staged by BSEAODS, with the proceeds from the play being added to the Theatre Restoration Fund. In celebration of Theatre Royal’s 200th anniversary the society have decided to restage the well-loved play.

This new production of Blithe Spirit stars Nic Metcalfe as Charles, Alice Sheepshanks as Ruth, Kat Mecalfe as Elvira, Jeremy Roberts as Madam Arcati, Eloise Trett as Edith, Richard Fawcett as Mr Bradman and Sinead St Leger as Mrs Bradman.

Bury St Edmunds Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (BSEAODS) was founded in 1902, their first production was HMS Pinafore, at Theatre Royal in April 1903. Earlier this year they staged a production of The Sound of Music, to critical acclaim, and previous productions have included High Society, Guys & Dolls and Grease. They will also be returning in the autumn season with a production of the musical, Evita.

Blithe Spirit has six performances at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, Tue 2 – Sat 6 Jul. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, call 01284 769505, book online at or visit the theatre in person.
