Rested and refreshed from a summer break, Cambridge Modern Jazz are back in September to start the new autumn season with a flourish. Two great gigs, the first at the spectacular Stapleford Granary with Johannes Berauers Hourglass project featuring Gwilym Simcock plus Jean Toussaint’s Brother Raymond project at Hidden Rooms. Superb jazz to warm up early Autumn!
On Thursday September 6th, 7:30pm, at Stapleford Granary we open the season with Johannes Berauer’s ‘Hourglass’ featuring Gwilym Simcock.

The first half of show features duos/trios with Thomas & Gwilym and Gwilym & Mike, plus some spectacular Indian percussion and vocalese from Bernhard. Gwilym and Thomas have been exploring arrangements of Bach and other classical works including Arvo Part, Ravel and Debussy. With Mike they also play a mix of pieces that Gwilym & Mike have co-written over the years and are still developing.
The second half will be music from the new album Hourglass, music written specially of these musicians by Austrian composer Johannes Berauer. Johannes is one of the most productive and diverse young composers in Austria. He navigates effortlessly through musical styles such as classical avant-garde, jazz and world music.

Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Jean Toussaint first came to prominence when he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1982, after studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since moving to London in 1987, Toussaint has released ten critically acclaimed CDs as a leader. For this show, Jean Toussaint presents his 11th album as part of his UK tour, ‘Brother Raymond’, recorded following extensive touring in 2015 and 2016 with his All-Star Roots & Herbs project.
