Candoco Dance Company

Celebrating their 25th Anniversary, returns to DanceEast following a sell-out performance last autumn of Counteracts. The unique company of disabled and non-disabled dancers will present a thrilling double bill that promises iconic choreography and stirring performances to captivate audiences.

“Candoco is the company for which choreographers reserve their wildest and often most inventive work” – THE OBSERVER

One half of the double bill is Thomas Hauert’s new piece Notturnino, a playful and poignant full company work that takes inspiration from the documentary Tosca’s Kiss, a touching film that follows the lives of retired opera singers living in a nursing home in Milan. Using the soundtrack from the film, the piece is scored by fragments of conversation, reminiscences and great operatic works performed by the ageing singers. Through humour and melodrama, Notturnino explores the fragility of the human condition.

“My fascination with dance has a lot to do with its sensual aspects, with how dance/motion feels and what one can feel when looking at it.. The soundtrack from the film, which features the voices of ageing singers re-enacting scenes from operas and talking about their lives, but also the sounds of everyday life at their rest home, conjures images of situations and characters, triggering associations and memories”  – THOMAS HAUERT

The second piece, Set and Reset/Rest, is a restaging project by Trisha Brown Dance Company with Candoco Dance Company. Originally choreographed on a cast of non-disabled dancers in 1983, Set and Reset/Reset is an iconic piece of contemporary dance performed to a contagious score by renowned multi-media artist Laurie Anderson. This ground-breaking piece will be revived with both a new set design and Candoco’s unique perspective.

“The process of re-construction (as opposed to replication) is a negotiation between freedom and limit – an exploration of possibility as the dancers create a new version of Trisha Browns’ landmark choreography” – ABIGAIL YAGER (FORMER TRISHA BROWN COMPANY DANCER)

Witness two iconic pieces of dance from the world’s leading company of disabled and non-disabled dancers by the Ipswich Waterfront at DanceEast on Friday 30 September, book now to avoid disappointment!
