In what was her 101st UK show, Caro Emerald returned to Cambridge Corn Exchange to yet another sellout crowd, on her latest UK tour.
With a set that was a mixture of old favourites, some with slightly different arrangements, a couple of new songs like ‘What’s Up Romeo‘, a cover of Camila Cabello’s ‘Havana‘, and an aeroplane backdrop, we kicked off on a flight that would take us from ‘Tahitian Skies‘ to Jazz Club Emerald and the Latin beats of Cuba. This show had a distinctly more sultry feel than previous performances.
As always the band were syncopated technical brilliance. Showing off their musicianship in instrumentals ‘Chromambo‘ & ‘A Night in Brisilia‘. With a duelling brass section who steal the show, especially David Temple; his stage presence, like his playing is awesome. From up tempo the pace slowed with a beautiful acoustic of ‘Close to Me‘ featuring Wieger Hoogendrop on guitar and whistling.
Sadly, the backing vocals were a little low in the mix to have the impact they should have on songs like ‘Excuse My French’, which was a real shame. However, that didn’t stop the audience getting up and having a dance at Miss Emerald’s invitation.
With a new album in the offing and a loyal fan base in the UK, it won’t be long before we see this lady gracing our shores again. With that we completed our Emerald Isle flight and return to an October night in Cambridge.
Opening for Caro Emerald was newly signed to Universal Music Loren Nine. With her self described melancholy lyrics and sumptuous vocal, she’s one to watch for.
