Colchester Comedy Festival

Colchester is going to get a whole lot funnier in October when the ever popular Comedy Festival returns.

Now in its fourth year, the festival runs from 1-16 October at nine different venues across town. With over 30 different comedy events planned you are sure to be entertained; there’s a huge array of comedy events including stand-up, comedy theatre, films, workshops, tours, talks and the Colchester New Comedian of The Year competition.

Amongst the bigger names there are shows from Rich Hall and Miles Jupp at the Mercury, Lucy Porter and Jo Caulfield at the Arts Centre.

Colchester New Comedian of The Year competition returns with thirty wannabe comics competing for the title. Heats will take place at The Mercury Studio with fina; at Colchester Arts Centre on Sunday 16 October.

Comedy workshops for all ages will take place at The Minories.

Firstsite host a series of comic films chosen by The Mayor, Councillor Julie Young, Firstsite Director Sally Shaw, Layer Marney’s Sheila Charrington and festival co-ordinator Hazel Humpherys.

Anthony Roberts of Colchester Arts Centre will be directing “The Play What I Wrote”, a fabulous homage to Morecambe & Wise at The Headgate Theatre.

New for 2016 is the LAUGH A MINUTE competition – aka your chance to get involved. The challenge is to make a funny video lasting 60 seconds or less, and simply send it to colchestercomedyfestival@gmail.com.

The videos can be any genre, be it a sketch, monologue, stand-up comedy set, funny song, or anything else, it doesn’t matter as long as it can make the judges laugh!

All entries will be posted on the festival website and a shortlist of entries will be shown at the festival launch on Friday 30 September at The Headgate Theatre. The winners will be announced during the festival & presentation made at final of Colchester New Comedian Of The Year on Sunday 16 October at Colchester Arts Centre. Entries should be emailed to colchestercomedyfestival@gmail.com by Friday 23 September.

Also new for 2016 is a comedy tour which takes place on Wednesday 12 & Saturday 15 October, Darren Gooding returns as his most worshipful absurdity A Mayor for a comedic tour of Colchester with attendees being advised to bring stout walking underwear and a change of opinion, be warned to expect anything!

Colchester Comedy Festival was the recipient of Colchester Borough Council’s Festival Support grant, without which the festival would not have been able to go ahead, Councillor Tim Young says,

“I look forward to it becoming a permanent fixture in the Colchester calendar and long may it continue to have punters rolling in the aisles with joy and laughter.”
