Mark Thomas Gives The NHS a 70th Birthday Check Up
Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is delighted to welcome comedian Mark Thomas to the stage with his touring show Check Up: Our NHS @ 70, based on a series of interviews with leading experts in and on the NHS, and residencies in hospitals and surgeries, Mark will look at what’s going right, what’s going wrong and how does it get better?
Mark Thomas is 54, the NHS is 70, UK national average life expectancy is 84. If Mark makes it to 84 the NHS will be 100, what will they both look like? Working with director Nicolas Kent, Mark uses his own demise to explore the state we’re in. The show aims to “take the pulse” of the NHS and was devised after spending a month in residency at the Imperial Group, which is four NHS hospitals in West London. Drawing from his experiences shadowing consultants, doctors and nurses, combined with a series of live interviews with academics and practitioners, Mark is looking at the NHS as it is and exploring where it might go next, all in his raw and angry comedy style.
Mark Thomas has been performing comedy for 30 years, has written 5 books and produced a number of shows including six series of The Mark Thomas Comedy Product and three Dispatches, both for channel 4; Five series of The Manifesto for BBC Radio 4; and he has been commissioned to write a new show for the Royal Opera House. He describes his work as “a mix of stand-up, theatre, journalism and the odd bout of performance art. I am 54 years old and don’t care if it sounds pretentious”
