Africarmen

A fusion of ballet, contemporary and African dance is what makes Bawren Tavaziva’s interpretation of the Carmen story so beautiful, sensual and strikingly powerful. Tavaziva Dance brings Africarmen to Ipswich on Friday 31st March.

Performed by six stunning dancers, Africarmen ignites this classic tale of desire, deceit and corruption in an African township where military corruption is rife. Carmen dangerously and defiantly ignores all warnings in the perusal of a better life but tragedy follows her like a shadow in hot sun.

Tavazvia was established in 2004 and is led by Zimbabwean-born Bawren Tavaziva. Bawren Tavaziva’s unique style is a choreographic synthesis of ballet, contemporary and African dance and the dancers articulate Bawren’s unique movement language with athletic physicality, technical precisions and breath-taking grave.

The performance will be accompanied by a specially commissioned original soundtrack, composed and arranged by composer and trombonist Fayyaz Virji, founding member of The Jazz Warriors and member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.

A group of local, talented young dancers will also open the show at DanceEast. Using Tavaziva’s repertoire as a starting point, the students have worked with Artistic Director Bawren Tavaziva and former Company dancer Katie Cambridge in a series of workshops to create their piece, which combines contemporary, ballet and African dance techniques, the signature style of Tavaziva.
