Legacy

An all-male dance company formed after an incredible production of Lord of The Flies is going from strength to strength as it approaches its second birthday. Legacy features many of the young male performers who starred in the pioneering production from acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures company. Since then, the locally-cast performers along with some new young male dancers have taken part in other productions and events as well as focusing more on building up their technique.

Now the company is set to showcase its work this Saturday (July 23) at The Garage in front of a specially invited audience. Legacy has evolved a long way since the initial announcements two years ago that the Lord of the Flies production was coming to Norwich Theatre Royal with a cast made up of New Adventures professional dancers and young male performers from across East Anglia.

That initial announcement two years ago led to summer and autumn workshops to teach repertoire from the show, followed by a gruelling audition and ended with an acclaimed week of performances of Lord Of The Flies in November 2014 at Norwich Theatre Royal. With the help of Matthew Bourne’s educational arm and a number of local organisations including Norfolk County Council, Norwich Theatre Royal and The Garage, the work has continued initially with some performance-based work and moving on to developing the dancers’ technique and creative skills.

Ambassador Scott said he and his colleague Cat felt it was vital to keep the work going.

“We wanted to keep as many boys who had experienced the Lord of the Flies process on stage as possible, and also open it up to more male dancers too,”

They have enjoyed great support from big names in the dance world including Adam Galbraith, who has performed with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and was also one of the touring directors for Lord Of The Flies, and Norfolk-born Toby Fitzgibbons who was a long-serving member of Scottish Dance Theatre and has also worked with top choreographers like Janet Smith, Hofesh Shechter and Liv Lorent.

And Scott said he has seen incredible improvement among those in the company. He explained:

“We were worried when it became Legacy that anyone new would feel excluded but everyone has been instantly welcomed and the whole company have an incredible bond. Since focusing more on technique, we have also seen an improvement in their skills, body strength and ability to take on different styles of dance.”
