Shobana Jeyasingh

Shobana Jeyasingh is one of the most exciting choreographers working in the UK today and DanceEast is thrilled to be welcoming her company to the Jerwood DanceHouse for the very first time. In her new full-length work, Material Men redux, she weaves the shared history and personal stories of her two virtuoso dancers – Sooraj Subramaniam and Shailesh Bahoran – into a powerful piece of dance theatre.

“Shobana Jeyasingh is one of the most gifted choreographers living and working in Britain” – London Evening Standard

Hip hop and classical Indian dance – the styles of the dancers could not be more different. But the two men share a history rooted in the dark realities of colonial migration and plantation labour, particularly Shailesh whose great-grandparents did the classic journey from a village in north India to work on the sugar plantations in Suriname.

“Material Men redux is also about two men who dance in very different ways, who lead very different lives who nevertheless make a journey towards each other in the course of Material Men redux” Shobana Jeyasingh

Material men redux is a dynamic exploration of colonial history, migration, the violence of loss and the creation of new ways of belonging. It gives voice to a less mainstream version of British history, 100 years after indentured labour was abolished by the British government.

“marvellously intense… the double edges of clarity and complexity, contrast and connection, are pure Jeyasingh” – The Guardian

The piece includes an evocative film by Simon Daw featuring archive photographic material and historic texts. The commissioned score by acclaimed Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin is played live on stage by The Smith Quartet with additional sound design by Leafcutter John.
