DanceEast Commission A Digital Christmas With Two Innovative Productions The Whole Family Can Enjoy

DanceEast are well known for their successful Christmas commissions which bring families together and over the years have become a tradition for many. The organisation is determined that this year will not be any different.

DanceEast are driven to become digital innovators and have used the challenging circumstances this year to create a Digital Dance Suite within the Jerwood DanceHouse. This innovative space has made it possible for DanceEast to commission and deliver two exciting activities that will bring joy to all ages this December.

From now until the end of January, looking out on to Foundry Lane from the windows of the Jerwood DanceHouse is an interactive installation. Titled Solstice, choreographed and directed by Kwesi Johnson, this installation encourages passers-by to stop and interact with the dancers on the screen.

It explores the Winter Solstice and the various festivals that bring us together this time of year. Performed by four local dance artists, including DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training alumni and DanceEast’s hip hop tutor, and filmed by F E N Y C E in the new Digital Suite at the Jerwood DanceHouse – this homegrown installation is the start of an exciting new adventure for DanceEast.

DanceEast have also worked with Tom Hobden, local dance artist and founder of Unit, to present the Super Awesome Digital Disco. This exciting new Zoom experience will get everyone dancing and enjoying huge belly laughs at the same time; it involves games, classic dance hits, dad dancing and more.

For Dance East, it’s been a blast of silliness and a perfect way to replace a missed Christmas party, a cancelled school disco, or even make a change from board games night. This fun, 50-minute zoom party will be available for two weekends, from Thursday 10 – Saturday 19 December.

Brendan Keaney, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of DanceEast said: “I can’t pretend that we’re not disappointed to not be presenting a traditional show this Christmas. Rather than dwell on the loss however, we have decided to put on our thinking caps and try out some new ideas. Where there is a challenge there is always an opportunity and we are very excited about where this is taking us!”
