East of England Organ Day

On Saturday 13th May 2017, the Royal Hospital School will be hosting the 3rd East of England Organ day, which will feature an Americana theme.

The King of Instruments has a long a varied history – from Roman hydraulics to progressive rock. The East of England Organ Day 2017 will explore the organ’s many musical guises.  At the heart of the day will be the school’s monumental and well-loved 1933 Hill, Norman and Beard organ.

Grammy award winner, Nathan Laube, is one of the world’s finest concert organists. ‘An International Star’, ‘the perfect blend of imposing technique and refined musicality’. He recently opened the restored organ of King’s College, Cambridge to widespread acclaim. His 5pm concert at RHS is one of only a handful of UK appearances this year (including a celebrity recital at St Paul’s Cathedral, London in August).

British organist Tom Bell will give a lecture-recital on two giants from contemporary American music – William Bolcom and Milton Babbitt. At the centre of Tom’s programme is a rare chance to hear Bolcom’s ‘Black Host’ for organ, tape and percussion. Tom will also include two world premieres of works written for the UK Orgelbuchlein project.

American mezzo-soprano, Quinn Patrick Ankrum, will present a late morning recital of American classics, from Cole Porter to Ned Rorem. Quinn is Professor of Voice at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and is well-known for her strong, lyrical voice and sizzling coloratura. The Prometheus Singers, conducted by Andrew Cantrill-Fenwick, with organist William Saunders, will give a concert of American choral music at 3pm in the Chapel. Their programme includes beautiful a cappella favourites by Eric Whitacre, as well as Bernstein’s riotous ‘Chichester Psalms’.

The organ concert after lunch, ‘Stars & Stripes Forever’ will be played by the winners of the 2016 London Organ Competition: Michael Stephens-Jones (senior winner) and Paul Greally (junior winner). Their programmes include patriotic organ fireworks by Sousa and Locklair.

If you would like to be present at this event, which will take place in the Royal Hospital School Chapel from 10am – 6pm this Saturday, tickets can be purchased online here: https://experiencetickets.co.uk/project/east-of-england-organ-day/
