Hold on to your hats as UK Country legend Hank Wangford rides into Town with his lost Cowboys on 12th October – the first in a new series of exciting ‘GrapevineLIVE Introduces‘ gigs!
For over 30 years Hank Wangford has been a leading British torchbearer for country music, adding his own brand of deadpan humour with songs that bring us insights such as “I ain’t married but the wife is”.
Dr Sam Hutt, better known in country circles as his tragic alter ego Hank Wangford, is one of the great English originals. Travel writer, doctor and president of the Nude Mountaineering Society, he became obsessed with country on meeting the legendary Gram Parsons, and went on to achieve cult status in the punk era of the early 80s, with his mix of deadpan humour and classy musicianship.
Hank has inspired a whole generation of British singers with his affectionate and witty approach to the music and is well known for his television programmes on the subject. Local promoters Peppery are bringing him to Ipswich Manor Ballroom on October 12th with The Lost Cowboys, a collection of some of the finest country and roots musicians in the world. Expect an unforgettable roller-coaster ride ‘country style’, with harmonies, steel guitar wizardry, tears and laughter with stories of tragedy, love and broken hearts in obscure honky tonk classics and originals.
The band includes: BJ Cole – the pedal steel wizard (who has toured and recorded with amongst others The Verve, REM, Sting, Emmylou Harris, Elton John), Martin Belmont – Stratocaster and 6-String Bass (ex-Graham Parker & the Rumour, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash). Kevin Foster – bass guitar. Roy Dodds – drums. (Fairground Attraction, Eddie Reader) and Anna (Spanner) Robinson – Vocals and electric bass.
‘If you want originality, bite, twang and cutting wit, there’s only one man to see. His name is Hank Wangford.’ – New York Times
Hank Wangford appears at The Manor Ballroom Ipswich on Friday October 12th. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets priced £16 in advance are available online at beerandco.uk or from 01473 256 069
