Private Peaceful

Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is pleased to welcome Scamp Theatre back to the stage, with their production of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, direct from London’s West End and commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

This production is adapted and directed by Simon Reade, performed by Andy Daniel and is suitable for ages 8 and above. Produced by Scamp Theatre who have previously visited Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with their production of Stick Man.

Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo (Also the author of War Horse and I Believe in Unicorns). His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War. Talking about the play, Michael said “Private Peaceful at the theatre is a moving experience that not only tells the story of a young soldier’s final day in World War One, but perhaps more importantly conveys the strength of human spirit”.

Private Peaceful is at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds Tue 25 – Sat 29 Sep. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, call 01284 769505, book online at www.theatreroyal.org/shows/private-peaceful-2/ or visit the theatre in person.
