The Beatles, The Everly Brothers, Status Quo, The Rolling Stones – you’ve not got much chance of seeing a line-up like that any time soon. That is, not unless you’re among the audience coming along to see That’ll Be The Day.
That’ll Be The Day is the UK’s number one rock & roll variety production, and it returns to Norwich Theatre Royal on Thursday 11 May. It’s a non-stop medley of songs from the golden age of pop, interspersed with hilarious sketches.
Featuring songs from the genre’s 1950s beginnings, and running up until the late 70s with bands like Dire Straits, no act is safe from being paid irreverent ‘tribute’ by the cast.
A nostalgic celebration of the rock & roll era, the show is a theatrical institution, one which has travelled more than a million miles, and played to more than three million people.
It started out in 1985 as a brief six-week cabaret tour named ‘The Happy Days Of Rock ‘n’ Roll’. The show scored a second summer season, and now, three decades on, That’ll Be The Day is entertaining audiences as much as ever. Ever since that first performance, it has been written, directed and produced by cast member Trevor Payne, a firm favourite with audiences.
Performed completely live, the show employs a close-knit band of musicians to recreate those iconic rock & roll sounds. That group now includes guitarist and drummer Ollie Gray; the son of original cast member Kate Gray (who was up and touring again within weeks of Ollie’s birth), he now brings his young son on the road with him.
