RoughCast’s Twelfth Night at Public Hall in Early July.
Following their sell-out tour of A Christmas Carol, RoughCast return to Shakespeare with a typically fast-moving and energetic production of the most delightful of his romantic comedies – Twelfth Night so come along to the theatre-based show at Beccles Public Hall on Thursday 6 July at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm).
Director, Mark Burridge, has chosen to give the production a Latin-American theme partly inspired by Spaghetti Westerns: “I’ve always felt that Shakespeare’s comedies can be set anywhere and at any time as long as it is colourful and atmospheric. A western-style setting suits this story, with its passionate love story and its duels and brawls. Let’s hope we get some sultry Latin-American evenings for our outdoor performances.”
Shipwrecked twins, Viola and Sebastian, wash up in the sleepy town of Illyria. Although distraught in the belief that her brother is lost in the shipwreck, the resourceful Viola dons man’s clothing and seeks employment with Duke Orsino, the headman in the town. Things get complicated though, when Viola is sent to woo the beautiful Olivia on Duke Orsino’s behalf and Olivia inconveniently falls in love with Viola in his male disguise. To this we can add the drunken antics and practical jokes of Olivia’s uncle Sir Toby Belch and Olivia’s other hapless suitor Sir Andrew Aguecheek, alongside their ongoing battle with the pompous and self-satisfied steward Malvolio (who also has his eye on the delightful Olivia.) Inevitably, to cap it all Viola’s twin arrives just in time to be mistaken for his sister to whom he bears an uncanny resemblance.
