Whitney – Queen of the Night

It’s almost ten years since the tragic passing of the powerhouse performer that was Whitney Houston, but her soul and spirit certainly lived on last night at the Ipswich Regent – with an outstanding performance by the cast of the West End hit show, ‘Whitney – Queen of the Night’.

Having enjoyed huge success in London in 2019, this nine strong troupe of talented performers (led by Elesha Paul Moses as Whitney herself) are currently touring the UK and delighting audiences with three decades of unforgettable love songs, power ballads and pop classics.

Our show last night opened with the five piece live band alongside the three backing singers bringing us ‘So Emotional’, after which Elesha (aka Whitney!) took to the stage to deliver the singer’s first ever UK number 1 single ‘Saving All My Love’.

This perfectly showcased Elesha’s full vocal range from mezzo to soprano, and because Elesha has gone to great efforts to also look as much like the superstar as possible, you really could’ve been forgiven for thinking this was the real deal!

More ballads and pop followed, interspersed with a little bit of gospel with the lesser known song ‘Jesus Loves Me’ and then Elesha and the band picked up the pace and we were dancing in our seats to ‘Step By Step’, ‘Love Will Save the Day’ and the first half of the show closed to resounding applause with the show’s title track ‘Queen of the Night’.

There was a happy buzz as we took our seats for the second half of this spectacular show…beautifully opened with ‘One Moment in Time’ and then the cast showed their fun-loving side with some audience participation and a singalong to ‘My Love is Your Love’ with Sean (a very brave chap in the third row) being singled out to join Elesha in what was possibly the shortest duet ever! The audience really engaged with the cast here and made for an even more entertaining evening – and a big round of applause for Sean!

Of course, no Whitney show would be complete without the iconic ‘I Will Always Love You’ and Elesha hit every single note with total ease – she even took time so share her lighter and cheeky side when a female audience member over anticipated the timing and sang out ahead of time, and Elesha could be seen openly chuckling on stage.

After that spine tingling rendition of The Bodyguard’s classic, we were soon back in boogie mode along to ‘Higher Love’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, ‘How Will I Know’ and the sensational pop masterpiece, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’.

Elesha clearly loves what she does and has a huge respect for her fellow band members and singers, taking the time to introduce them all one by one, and give them each their moment in the spotlight.

They’re a super talented ensemble that wowed us throughout the entire performance and this fabulous evening ended on a perfect high with the George Benson classic, ‘The Greatest Love’ – with a standing ovation that was so richly deserved.

The tour takes a break mid December before heading out again mid January 2022, and for those of you that missed this West End spectacular, ‘Whitney – Queen of the Night‘ returns to Ipswich Regent on Friday October 7th 2022 – and it’s highly recommended!
