Goodnight Mister Tom

Following the success of Our Day Out: The Musical in 2017, Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is delighted to be running the Summer School project again in 2018 with a brand new professional production of Michelle Magorian’s Goodnight Mister Tom.

The project gives young people an exciting opportunity to work either on stage alongside a professional cast (including Roy Hudd as the grumpy but lovable Mr Tom) or behind the scenes with Theatre Royal’s technical and production teams.

The Summer School runs from Mon 30 July until Sat 8 Sep, encompassing the whole run of the show (Fri 24 Aug – Sat 8 Sep) and has been opened out to young people aged from 9 to 20 years. We’ve already had the first stage of auditions but we are still looking for talented boys and girls aged 10 to 13 years old who can act and sing to play challenging key roles in the production. William and Zach are evacuated from London to the countryside where they meet Carrie, George and Ginnie, they all go through harrowing experiences but also the joy of forging strong new friendships. The successful applicants will need to be available from Mon 30 July right through the summer and including all of the scheduled performances. The next round of auditions will take place on Monday 4 June from 6.30pm-9pm, if you are interested in applying please contact natalie@theatreroyal.org.

nine below zero

The Second World War has just broken out and the life of Tom Oakley (Roy Hudd), an old man in the country, is about to change for the better. Having lived alone for 40 years he reluctantly takes under his wing ten-year-old William, an evacuee from London. As William begins to soften Tom’s seemingly hardened exterior, an unspoken and unbreakable bond is formed.

We are grateful to our sponsors Anglia Suspended Ceilings and to Bury Rotary for their bursary support on this production.
