Menagerie Theatre Company and Cambridge Junction present the twenty-second annual Hotbed Theatre Festival – a celebration of new plays for the stage. Friday July 19th – Sunday July 21st.

Since 2002 Hotbed has been a celebration of new writing for the stage – every play, performance and event is always a world premiere! This year is no exception… with an extraordinary weekend for theatre lovers who want to see new writing come to life for the first time, and experience the energy and imagination that a weekend immersed in theatre brings… there’s up to 32 hours of new work to see!

Hotbed 24 showcases 19 new productions – featuring international work from Romania and Sweden, as well as exciting first time young writers, alongside artists of major national and international standing – including Steve Waters – regarded as one of the UK’s major voices exploring contemporary stories around climate change and environmentalism.

At the heart of Hotbed Theatre Festival is a major new play by Martha Loader, winner of the 2022 Bruntwood Prize (Judges Award) for Playwriting. Martha’s play Albatross explores motherhood, and the fragile boundaries of family bonds in the age of climate catastrophe. This is the premiere production of Albatross before it transfers to London for an extended run and onto national touring in 2025.

Hotbed 24 also provides a platform for new and exciting work from Hidden Voices – artists who don’t often get a chance to showcase their work. This year we have been working with three artists to help bring their powerful voices to wider audiences. Their work- dramas and comedies (all free performances to support full access!) – are about life with disability, homelessness and living on the margins – told through the lens of the people who have experienced these challenges.

Hotbed 2024 will also feature work from an array of fantastic guest productions including Lamphouse Theatre’s Hammer horror homage Frankenstein (On A Budget), Steve Waters’ Phoenix, Dodo, Butterfly and Cambridge Writer Tom Murray’s new play- Forgotten in The land of Egypt.

And there’s one amazing piece everyone is going to be buzzing about – Toy Stories by Chris Dobrowolski which promises to take the audience on a truly hilarious storytelling adventure through art, politics, history and …toys! The show’s tagline is “from Toys to Nazis” – see how Chris manages to bring that to life!

This is the one and only chance to catch it before it heads to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August!

The best way to enjoy Hotbed is with days passes which can get ticket holders into every show and event on that day – a weekend of 32 hours of theatre in total – can anyone complete the theatre marathon and be able to say “ I saw it first – at Hotbed!”?
