Ian McKellen

Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is thrilled to be welcoming a legendary star of stage and screen, Sir Ian McKellen to the stage as part of his 80th birthday tour of 80 theatres throughout the UK, contributing to the 200th anniversary year of Theatre Royal (Fri 12 and Sat 13 Apr).

Born in May 1939, Sir Ian McKellen is a multi-award-winning English actor. His most famous roles include the titular King in Richard III (1995), James Whale in Gods and Monsters (1998), Magneto in the X-Men films (2000 – 2014) and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies (2001 – 2014).

He has created a tour of 80 theatres in celebration of his 80th birthday and is presenting a highly entertaining evening of laughter, insights and recital from his long illustrious career in film and on stage. Sir Ian will talk about his attachment to Bury St Edmunds and Theatre Royal, he’ll segue into Shakespeare as well as some of his favourite speeches and career moments. The tour is something very important to Ian, a chance to give back to theatres and support theatre around the country.

One Broker are proud to be sponsoring the performance on Fri 12 Apr; as a business, they have a long standing relationship with Bury St Edmunds, one of their 3 offices has been based in the town for over 40 years. They have shown their support to Theatre Royal and recognise the importance of the theatre to the heart of the town. The performance on Sat 13 Apr is sponsored by Gibbs Denley Financial Services, Director Simon Rees said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring Theatre Royal, we have worked with them a number of times over the years, the shows they run and service they offer are always of exceptional quality. Theatre Royal is an incredible resource for Bury St Edmunds, and we are proud to be able to help support them.”

Both performances are fundraisers for the theatre and will help towards creating The 200th Anniversary Fund. The fund will enable Theatre Royal to augment its extensive programmes for children and Youth Theatre; boost our ability to deliver the often life-changing Associate Artists Programme, working in collaboration with local community groups; and support Theatre Royal’s ability to be a producing house, enriching the heritage interpretation as the last remaining example of a Regency Playhouse in the whole of the UK, for current and future generations.
