Kevin Pearce

Grapevine’s October coverstar is Essex boy Kevin Pearce, ahead of his tour and the single release of “Jump” on the 21st of October, we had a quick chat with him.

Let’s get to it – to those that may not have heard you before, how would you describe your music?

I’d say it’s somewhere between Folk and Electronica, with an Ethereal aspect to it.

Your new single “Jump”, released on 21st October, has a little bit more of an electronic influence than your other tracks – what prompted this progression?

I’ve been experimenting with a lot with rhythms of late and ingesting lots of electronic music via some electronic artist friends, such as I Speak Machine and I Monster. I guess that’s rubbed off.

You’re going on tour, and you’re even playing a venue that we like to think was named after us! What’s the best part of performing live?

I think that it’s in the moment. With us all glued to our phones so much these days, I find it’s a release from that. I find life way easier behind a mic and on a stage than I do, say, going to the supermarket.

As an Essex boy, I’m guessing your show in Colchester will be a bit like a homecoming gig – do
you think it’s important to try and play shows local to your roots?

Yeah! I am playing Colchester Arts Centre on October 20th. I think playing homecoming shows is
important and Colchester Arts Centre is where I started playing shows as a kid, so it’s a special place for me.

I hear you’ve been working on an LP too, how is that coming along?

The album is finished and ready for release in 2017. It’s my most complete work to date and the thing I am most proud of. I’ll be working on a follow up after this one’s released too.

Exciting! Following the recent trend of the return of the vinyl – do you prefer CD or vinyl?

CDs – purely for the fact there are no vinyl players for cars – or not that I know of…

I have to agree I think. Having grown up with your father’s music collection, who would you say your current inspirations are?

I love so much music from so many genres, but lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Kate Tempest, David Bowie, John Grant, Curtis Mayfield, Autechre and The Specials.

That said, who would you pay good money to see live?

I’ve never seen Bjork live and she is someone I’d love to see play.

You seem to have developed quite a loyal fan base, this must be flattering/exciting?

Yeah, I feel lucky that they have stuck by me through all the musical twists and turns. All the fans I’ve met have been top people too.

That’s good to hear. Finally, here’s something a little fun to end on – if you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Nick Drake – Pink Moon. There is such beauty in a man baring his soul for the last time.

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us Kevin – we look forward to seeing you across the region, including Colchester (20/10), Chelmsford (05/11) and Norwich (09/11) and to the release of your new single. For more information and tickets visit www.kevinpearcemusic.com.
