Announcing the line-up for Jazz by the Waterfront 2018

St Peter’s by the Waterfront, the Ipswich based community arts and heritage centre has announced its line-up for it’s Jazz by the Waterfront evenings for 2018 with a great variety of music and groups both local and national.

The season kicks off with The Jazz of Dudley Moore on Friday 2nd February with the Chris Ingham Trio featuring Chris Ingham on piano, Paul Higgs on trumpet, Geoff Gascoyne on bass and George Double on drums. The quartet will present an evening of the compositions of the famous comic and actor Dudley Moore from the bright swinging 60’s where he came to fame through to the more expressive and bittersweet of his pieces.

The season features two evenings of gypsy and klezmer music, first with the Andy Lawrenson Trio with their Gypsy Jazz Celebration and the music of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli in 1930’s Paris on Friday 2nd March, followed by the Gadjo Club Quartet on Friday 1st June, a group with a shared passion for eastern European and klezmer music combined with a love of art-rock, swing, Americana and other world sounds.

Jazz by the Waterfront is bringing in a number of new acts with a diverse range of music for this season. The Sam Plackett Organ Trio, on Friday 6th April, is fronted by London based jazz guitarist Sam Plackett featuring a mix of jazz standards and his own compositions with organist, Mike Gorman and drummer, Tom Jiggins.

The leading UK saxophonist and featured member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra Derek Nash will be bringing his quartet on Friday 3rd August. Derek is renowned for his energetic, vibrant, passionate and charismatic performances on all four saxophones – from sonorous baritone to soaring soprano and we look forward to a great evening.

Weird Rare Animal is a local group performing on Friday 7th September featuring musicians who have played at Jazz by the Waterfront over the years with many other groups, they are Tomi Farkas, Anne Burton and Jake Hatter bringing a selection of tunes Charlie Parker, George Benson, Bach, all jazzed up and with a modern easy-listening approach.

A night of latin jazz and African sounds will be brought to the season by Amarea on Friday 5th October. The group, which is a regular at the Flipside Festival at Snape and Lowestoft, will be bringing their music which is heavily influenced by the work of Jobim, Barroso, Louis Bonfa and Marisa Monte with songs from Brazil, Venezuela and Cuba.

2018 also sees the welcome return of a number of acts that have performed at Jazz by the Waterfront over the last few years, including Essential Sounds Big Band on Friday 1th May 2018, Hannah Horton, sax player extraordinaire and her quartet on Friday 2nd November and local jazz singer Andi Hopgood completes the season Friday 7th December.

All of the Jazz by the Waterfront evenings start at 7.45pm and tickets are still only £10 when bought in advance from jazzbythewaterfront.com. Tickets bought on the door are £12. Fully licensed bar available throughout the evening.
