Jazz Weekender

The Norwich Jazz Club has just announced its early plans for the celebrated and highly popular Jazz Weekender, which presented its first festival of jazz in 1989. This year it will be taking place from the 2nd to the 4th of September across four fine venues in Norwich’s city centre.

One of the top jazz groups appearing will be the Liane Carroll Trio. The highly emotive Liane is considered one of the finest contemporary vocalists by many writers on the jazz scene, described by The Times as deeply soulful. She has been performing professionally as a pianist and singer from the age of 15. A popular regular at Ronnie Scott’s, she provides a sublime and polished blend of powerful rhythm and glorious harmony – with a large proportion of the finest jazz standards in her repertoire. Her band features Roger Carey on bass and Mark Fletcher on drums.

One player who will be greeted with equal enthusiasm promises to be James Torme who will be backed by the powerful and precise Dunnett/Baxter Big Band, which will also be playing its own set during the weekend as just one of a dozen top contemporary performers, these include jazz stars such as Julian Siegel and Enrico Tomasso.

The reputation of this event has grown across the years, especially due to the box office appeal of the players and singers – but also because of the excellent planning and the great  atmosphere of the event.  It is run by jazz players and fans for jazz players and fans.

Many enthusiasts from across our region will be turning out in considerable numbers with a fair proportion from across the broader UK and Europe with even a few from still further afield.
