John Ward Band Set to Open First Light Festival With a Song Written Especially for Event.

During Lockdown in 2020, Lowestoft songwriter and musician, John Ward was honoured to be asked by First Light to write a song for the festival and to celebrate Lowestoft and the Solstice.

The song John created is The Light Returns, an uplifting anthem which, in four minutes thirty seconds, sweeps a light across the history of the town and looks to its future with a rousing chorus.

The song was recorded with a video in Pakefield Church for the 2020 Winter Solstice and released on social media and as a single on all major streaming platforms. But due to Covid, there has been no opportunity for the full live treatment that was intended for the song until now.

A performance of The Light Returns will open this year’s First Light festival at noon on the Sunlight Stage on Lowestoft South Beach. Besides his own band, John will be joined by classical singers, musicians, community choirs and school children, to perform an ambitious arrangement of the song.

The Light Returns will be sung twice, with the audience on the beach invited to join in a chorus of communal singing for the second rendition. You can hear the song and learn it on Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Youtube and see if you can spot all the unique references to the town, past and present, then come and join the ensemble down on the beach to sing along.
