Aldeburgh Festival Cancelled

From Roger Wright, Chief Executive of Snape Maltings

It is with enormous sadness that we have to cancel the 2020 Aldeburgh Festival.

Given the current circumstances, this will not be a surprise. Nonetheless, we know how disappointing it is for our audiences and supporters, as well as the diverse creative community which would have been involved in presenting the array of performances we had planned in June.

We have waited to take this decision in the hope that we may have been able to present some of our events. But, as recent days have made clear, that hope was above reality. I recognise that everyone needs clarity in order to be able to plan, even though it is a message that we would never have wanted to deliver.

Income from Festival ticket purchases is critical to securing our year-round charitable work supporting young artists, people living with conditions such as dementia and Parkinson’s, and those experiencing the most challenging circumstances in their daily lives.

We would therefore be enormously grateful if you would consider making a donation to help minimise the heavy impact of this lost ticket income and enable us to continue this vital work beyond the current crisis. We know that music and the arts has the power to make positive change in people’s lives, and, when we emerge from this lock-down period, this mission will be more important than ever. Donate to support our work HERE.

We aim to present at least some of our Festival performances at future dates, including the new music which we were expecting to premiere. We are delaying the announcement of our August Snape Proms series to enable us to continue monitoring Government advice. We will be in contact about this in due course.

All of my colleagues join me in thanking you for your support. The many kind messages of goodwill we’ve received mean a lot to us and are a reminder of the warmth felt towards the Festival and our year-round work in Snape, Aldeburgh and beyond.

We look forward to a time when we can come back together in this unique place, having our lives enhanced by the power of live music again.
