On Saturday 13 May, Aldeburgh Music Club Choir with Prometheus Orchestra and a fine line-up of soloists perform two contrasting sacred works by Joseph Haydn in the perfect setting of Orford church. The concert also includes two Scarlatti motets and The Deer’s Cry by Arvo Pärt.

Haydn’s Salve Regina is an early work scored for modest forces, soprano soloist, choir, organ, and strings. Haydn contrasts elaborate, operatic writing for the soloist with chordal writing for the choir to create a thoroughly enjoyable piece of music.

The Maria Theresa Mass is a mature masterpiece, composed towards the end of Haydn’s life, between The Creation and The Seasons, when Haydn was at the height of his powers, inventive and witty as ever, and relishing the chance to write more elaborate sacred music combining choir, soloists and a symphony orchestra, to great effect.
