Karen Tweed Gigs In Norwich & Cambridge
Karen Tweed has been described as a mercurial, elegant and a rather eccentric yet decorative accordion queen. This could also apply to her teaching methodology and, actually any other part of her life.
Her roots began in the traditional music of Ireland; forsaking a career graphic design and teaching Art, she has spent over 29 years touring and teaching through music, which has led to collaborations with Timo Alakotila, Kathryn Tickell, The Poozies, SWÅP, Ian Carr, Chris Wood, Andy Cutting and more recently with The Secret North in Scotland.
Her travels uncovered a love of Scandinavian music and the traditions found in the northern hemisphere which she continues to thread into her love of traditional Irish music and the music of the British Isles.
She is currently exploring composition, connecting the creative energies of drawing, woodcarving, stonecarving, calligraphy, knitting and weaving with her music writing. She has a collection of her own compositions (fully illustrated) and two new CD releases: ‘Midsummer May Monday’ (2017) with pianist/composer Timo Alakotila and ‘Luckpenny’ (2017) with flautist/composer Tom McElvogue.
She enjoys stories, writing with an ink pen, talking and silence. Musically, she works mostly solo and with her occasional collaborations with Timo Alakotila (May Monday), Tom McElvogue, Karen Street, Colum Sands and Johnny Coppin.
She delights in teaching and is a regular guest tutor at Limerick and Newcastle Universities, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Folkworks and Bath Folk Festival Summer Schools inspiring hives of creativity, whether through music, art or performance.
Karen Tweed, whose home is now Orkney in Northern Scotland is popping down to do a peedie solo tour in Southern England. Drawing together threads of her passions – nature, colour, oceans, birds, drawing, knitting, words and music she brings her distinctive palette to the solo accordion in these intimate acoustic settings.
Spring is in the air, fun and adventure are on the horizon – always a mix of wacky, mercurial, poignant and enchanting; Karen will present her new compositions and harmonic thoughts along with her favourite tunes from her many travels and shared musical collaborations.
