The 2nd East of England Organ Day

On Saturday 7th May 2016, the Royal Hospital School will be hosting the 2nd East of England Organ day.

The King of Instruments has a long a varied history – from Roman hydraulics to progressive rock. The East of England Organ Day 2016 will explore the organ’s many musical guises, with a varied programme including early music, jazz, contemporary music, and programme music. At the heart of the day will be the school’s monumental and well-loved 1933 Hill, Norman and Beard organ, but this year she will be joined by the chapel’s choir organ, and a small chamber organ in the Burns Recital Hall.

Tom Bell (International Recitalist, and RHS Organ Tutor) will join forces with jazz aficionado Tim Harper (Ripon Cathedral), as well as presenting a master-class on new music for the organ. William Saunders (Director of Music) will play Iain Farrington’s ear-catching and entertaining ‘Animal Parade’, and School Organist, Andrew Cantrill will give an interactive lecture on the history of the organ. The Celebrity Recital will be given by acclaimed British concert organist, Kevin Bowyer (Glasgow University). Kevin’s vast repertoire will be the starting point for a concert of the familiar and the not-so-familiar.
