Merrily On High

Acclaimed Norfolk-based company brings three specially commissioned Christmas monologues to Wells Maltings.

In this most difficult year for live performance many venues have set aside their traditional pantos and Christmas spectaculars looking instead for small cast productions as their preferred Covid-safe option. No show comes with a smaller cast than a monologue and Wells Maltings, North Norfolk’s newest arts venue, has commissioned a programme of three solo performances as one of the highlights of their Christmas schedule.

fEAST Theatre is a company which has built a reputation for bringing inspiring local stories to stages across the region was asked to create three new pieces and fEAST Artistic Director Dawn Finnerty explains how they went about it.

We gave our writers Rob John and Robin McLoughlin the brief that each of the three monologues would be set in Norfolk on a Christmas Eve and that each would take its title from the words of a Christmas carol. Each piece was written with a particular actor in mind and the finished scripts were funny, thought-provoking and moving. There’s also a dash of the macabre. We’ve absolutely loved working on them.

But work on the plays has not been straightforward. Rehearsals have had to take place throughout the recent lockdown via Zoom and the actors (Owen Evans of Nimmo Twins fame, Sam Thompson and Dawn Finnerty) won’t actually set a foot inside a rehearsal room until the week of the show.

Simon Daykin Wells Malting Director said ‘It’s so great to be producing live theatre for Norfolk with fEAST again, and we are sure that audiences are going to love this show. It’s going to bring some much needed light and warmth to Christmas 2020’
