Music in May

May is filled with the sound of music for music lovers at Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre and Cramphorn Studio.

Fred and Ginger (A Perfect Partnership)‘ is the story of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The show stars the award-winning Robert Habermann, who sings the songs and tells the story of Fred and Ginger. The show includes all of the eight films that they made together, but also covers Fred’s solo career. Expect to hear such classic songs as Top Hat, A Fine Romance and They Can’t Take That Away From Me and many others from the golden age of cinema. The show comes to the Cramphorn Studio on Friday 11 May at 8pm.

Continuing the theme of classic Hollywood royalty is ‘Sinatra and Me‘.  Richard Shelton, the Hollywood-based British performer, has appeared at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and The Coliseum in London to name just a few legendary venues, and is now bringing his tuxedo, which was once owned and worn by Sinatra, and some of ‘Old Blue Eyes’ greatest songs to the Civic Theatre’s stage on Sunday 20 May. Richard will be backed by the fabulous Denmark Street Big Band, founded by its Musical Director and band-leader, Paul Birch, and has been the resident big band at the Royal Opera House since 2013.

The Magic of Motown‘ brings over 40 timeless songs of the classic American record label to life. The Motown label and songs helped to define a generation with absolute classic songs such as; Ain’t No Mountain, Dancing In The Street and Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Now this spectacular production includes dazzling dances, glittering costumes and superb musicianship, all of which goes some way to explain why the show has been seen by over a million people and is one of the biggest success stories in British theatre history. There are limited tickets available for the show on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May.

The Lunchtime Concerts continue every Wednesday in the Cramphorn Studio at 1pm and offer a delightfully relaxing interlude to the day.
