Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds has announced a brand new theatre workshop for adults aged 18+ exploring individuality. The ten week workshop begins 25 January.
According to Wikipedia, the term ‘queer’ is a word that describes any person who does not fit into what is considered ‘normal’ by society, particularly when talking about their gender and/or sexuality. It is a word that has been re-appropriated by social and political LGBT rights activists and is the word that a lot of academic studies use to describe non-heterosexual identities. It is also used as a word which talks about someone’s sexuality or gender in a deliberately non-specific way.
This new ten session, weekly workshop will explore what makes us unique. Lead by David Whitney, theatre-maker, creative learning practitioner and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, participants will uncover personal stories and make them theatrical. They will learn the art of storytelling and how to bring words to life off the page, to write in their own voice, focusing on imagery, metaphor, form and structure.
Each week the group will use folk stories and traditional storytelling to explore what it is to be different, celebrating uniqueness. There will be an opportunity to explore queer history and politics and celebrate queer tales.
The group is aimed at people who are engaged with questions of identity, expression and sexuality. It is also for people who are new to those questions and interested in engaging with personal narratives. Participants may identify as queer and have experiences to share, or may simply want to find out more about their own identity.
No previous theatre experience is necessary.
The cost of the workshop is just £35 for ten session and bursary places are available.
