Pool (No Water)

Friendship, the nature of a public image and how the passage of time affects relationships all come into sharp focus into an edgy play being presented by fast-emerging new stage talent at Norwich Playhouse this summer.

pool (no water) is penned by the controversial playwright Mark Ravenhill and sees a famous artist gather a group of old pals at her luxury home to reminisce about old times and re-connect.

Although they are outwardly having a good time, jealousies and old emotional wounds begin to resurface and a horrific accident puts a stop to the nostalgia.

As their hostess lies seriously injured, the cameras are out and the guests decide whether her accident makes a wonderful piece of iconic art in its own right.

It is being presented by the Norwich Theatre Royal Young Company on August 2 and 3, and looks at the nature of belonging and friendship. Cast-member Charlotte Woollsey said: “I think they are almost at the point where they are beyond friendship. They are a bit like a family unit because they are so connected with each other.

It is not so much about jealousy but the artist is definitely the ‘it artist’ and all her friends have a connection to her. Some think she is a good person while others think she is bad, and they all have these very different links to her. There is also a separation there. She has moved away, created a life for herself and she has invited her friends to see this new life, but it has not gone well for her.”

Fellow cast member Libby Watson said being part of the production has been a great opportunity to stretch her acting skill. She said: “This has really given us the opportunity to explore ourselves as well.

Looking at the character, you can find things you relate to them so you can see the difference of how much work people put in. At first the lines were delivered how we thought they need to be. We have stripped that back now and it is all about feeling the words and the characters rather than just acting them.”

Pool (No Water) plays at the Norwich Playhouse from Friday 2-Saturday 3 August at 7.30pm.

Tickets £12, and concessions £10. To book, log onto www.norwichplayhouse.co.uk or call the box office on 01603 598598.
