Dr Feelgood and Nine Below Zero
Cambridge Junction 8 Dec 16
My musical roots were developed in Southend-on-Sea and in the early ‘70’s Dr. Feelgood were one of the bands to see. While Canvey Island may have been an unlikely birthplace for Britain’s finest R&B band it did allow me to see them many times. I was looking forward to seeing them again and the support act, Nine Below Zero, which also had a great reputation too.
So, over 40 years later, what has changed? Well, although there are none of the original band members, the present line-up of Robert Kane (vocals), Steve Walwyn (lead guitar), P H (Phil) Mitchell (bass) and Kevin Morris (drums) has been stable for nearly 20 years and during that time they have performed close to 2000 gigs together.
They did not disappoint, putting on a dynamic and powerful performance with that typical and well-loved Dr. Feelgood Rhythm and Blues sound.
Nine Belo Zero:
Unusually, the support act performed second. Nine Below Zero are a band with a great pedigree, still fronted by Denis and Mark after 38 years. Now touring with a new and extended line-up consisting of DENNIS GREAVES (Guitar/Vocals), MARK FELTHAM (Harmonica/Vocals), MICKEY BURKEY (Drums), BEN WILLIS (Bass), CHARLIE AUSTEN (Vocals), ANDREW NOBLE (Keyboards), CHRIS RAND (Saxophone) & PAUL JORDANOUS (Trumpet). They included songs from their 13 SHADES OF BLUE album, released in September.
What a performance! With a great mix of music around an R&B foundation, some brilliantly performed solos before coming back together for that big band power again and again. Overall an energetic and engaging performance that left you wanting more.
This really was an evening to remember with two absolutely brilliant headline bands, both well known in their own right, and with such a truly complementary sound. Both performed with such energy and enthusiasm that the receptive Junction crowd just soaked it up. We were truly entertained from the start through to the very last song by these masters of R&B – this was entertainment at its very best, brilliant!
