Spamalot Cast Announced

Mercury favourites Simon Shorten and Dale Superville are joined by a host of new faces in the first musical of the season, prior to a UK Tour.

The Mercury Theatre Colchester today announced the casting line-up for their first musical of the season, Eric Idle’s hysterical Monty Python masterpiece, Spamalot.  Lovingly ripped off from the hugely successful 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot is a riotous comedy full of misfit knights, killer rabbits, dancing nuns and ferocious Frenchmen.

We join King Arthur as he travels around the land gathering his Knights of the Round Table. This band of hapless adventurers are then tasked with a divine mission to locate the elusive Holy Grail – with uproarious consequences. With comic tunes including Brave Sir Robin, We’re Knights of the Round Table and perennial favourite Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, Spamalot audiences are sure to be dancing in the aisles.

Playing the irrepressible monarch of Camelot, King Arthur, is Bob Harms. Bob has held roles in a number of West End musicals including Chicago, Footloose, Dirty Dancing & Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Assisting him on his quest is Lady of the Lake, Sarah Harlington. Sarah is an old-hand in musical theatre, her roles include Kate Monster/Lucy in Avenue Q (UK Tour), Serena Katz in Fame (UK Tour) and Sally in Girlfriends (Union Theatre).

Panto favourite Dale Superville will be starring as the King’s loyal steed, Patsy, Dale has starred in numerous Made in Colchester productions and his credits at the Mercury include Idle Jack in Dick Whittington, Toad in Wind in the Willows, Wishee Washee in Aladdin and Centipede in James and the Giant Peach. Simon Shorten will also be returning following his Mercury Theatre debut last year as Pirelli in Sweeney Todd. Simon will be playing the brave knight Sir Lancelot, and his previous West End credits include first cover Val Jean in Les Miserables (Queen’s Theatre) and Artillery Man in War of the Worlds (Dominion Theatre).

Joining them on the hunt for the Holy Grail will be Marc Akinfolarin (The Color Purple, Jesus Christ Superstar and Assassins); John Brannoch (Cabaret, Chicago, Mamma Mia!, Matilda the Musical), Daniel Cane (Spamalot and Merrie England); Sally Frith (Mamma Mia! and Spend, Spend, Spend); Norton James (Love Story and Parade); Matthew Pennington (State Fair and Victor Victoria) and Gleanne Purcell-Brown (Bare and Sleeping Beauty).

Spamalot will be directed by Daniel Buckroyd, Artistic Director of the Mercury Theatre Colchester.

Daniel said:

Spamalot is an incredible show, and we’re looking forward to giving it the Made in Colchester treatment. Selladoor will tour the production across the UK, a reflection of our ever-closer partnership. We’ve assembled a brilliantly talented cast of 11 performers, including some Mercury favourites. Around half of the Colchester cast will  tour, with casting currently under way for the remainder of the touring roles. Bring on the rehearsals!”

Spamalot will play at the Mercury Theatre Colchester from Friday 21 April until Saturday 13 May. Tickets are available from £12. For more information, and to purchase tickets, visit www.mercurytheatre.co.uk or call 01206 573 948.
